Machias, ME- The University of Maine at Machias men's basketball team defeated College of St. Joseph (VT) 77-75 in a Saturday afternoon game in the Reynolds Center. The win improves the Clippers to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the Yankee Small College Conference standings.
The Clippers were able to hang on for the victory despite their two top scorers fouling out of the game, Elias Gutierrez and Floyd Higgins. After extending the lead to as many as eleven, with under 5 minutes to go, the Saints made a furious comeback cutting the lead to 2 with under a minute to go. Aaron Van Buren made two clutch free throws with 11 seconds to go to extend the lead to four. The Saints scored a basket as time expired, resulting in the 77-75 final. The Clippers had five players score in double figures led by Floyd Higgins 16, AC Ford 15, Aaron Van Buren 12, Erick Andrews and Elias Gutierrez 10. The Saints were led by Dre Anderson with 18 points.
Clipper Coach Brac Brady was pleased with the outcome, "CSJ is an outstanding team that competes really hard. I was pleased that we competed with them. We got on the floor for loose balls and battled for rebounds much better in the second half. If we can compete like that for 40 minutes we will be tough to beat."
The Clippers return to action Saturday, January 25th when they face Southern Maine in the Reynolds Center. Tip for the game is at 3 pm.
