(Scarborough, ME) The University of Maine at Machias Clippers men's soccer team advanced to the Sunrise Conference Championship game to face the NAIA's #5 ranked team, the University of Maine at Fort Kent Saturday afternoon.
The weather was not cooperative for the game as the teams played in a torrential downpour.
The Clippers fought off the Bengals attacks for the first 45 minutes and the game remained scoreless at half. The field conditions affected the second half of the game tremendously. The Clippers were unable to play the ball out of the back as passes would get stuck in a puddle every time the ball was passed on the ground. Fort Kent continued to pressure goalkeeper Kyle Lancaster forcing him to make 10 saves on the day. Fort Kent finally got on the board in the 61st minute after a poor clearance went to Bengals forward Jermaine West who took the ball to the end line and crossed it to Keith Williams who beat his defender and placed the ball past Lancaster.
The Bengals scored again one minute later. This time it was West with the goal. The second goal proved to be too much for the Clippers to overcome as the Bengals went on to win the Sunrise Championship 2-0. The Clippers season ends at 10-6-2 (8-3-2 in the Sunrise Athletic Conference).
