UNB-St John University held the lead for most of the game, but the Lady Clippers, led by Sabree Rodriguez, scored when it mattered, first to send the game into overtime and again to get the victory in a 66-65 decision Monday night at the Reynolds Center. The home team got off to a rough start after being forced to juggle their starting rotation due to an injury to point guard Tekerya Davis last week. With only one practice to make adjustments the Clippers struggled for much of the game and were slowed further due to early foul trouble.
Trailing 22-29 at the half, the Lady Clippers found new energy as Elisa Boyd set the tone defensively leading to a flurry of steals and Rodriguez came to life offensively scoring 22 of her 34 points in the second half to go along with 17 rebounds for the night.
The Clippers were forced to go to the bench early and often as they sent the visitors to the charity stripe 41 times compared to only 20 free tosses for themselves. Starters Kayla Wood and Jamyriah McPherson made early exits with fouls and were joined late by reserve Elisa Boyd.
The Clippers extended their defensive pressure the last 10 minutes of the second half and with time running out, Rodriguez penetrated the Seawolves defense for a turnaround jumper in the lane to tie the game. The overtime was a see saw battle and it appeared the Canadians would spoil the Lady Clippers home debut, but another forced turnover led to a Rodriguez breakaway forcing the Seawolves to foul. Rodriguez calmly sank both attempts and the visitors ran out of time allowing the home team to pick up the victory.
Narrowly missing double figure scoring were Jamyriah McPherson and Liron Albag with 9 points and 6 rebounds each.
The Lady Clippers continue a five game home stand as they host Unity College on Thursday at 6 pm followed by a visit from nationally ranked Cardinal Stritch University of Wisconsin on Sunday at 1 pm.
