The Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias men's basketball team opened the regular
season with a victory Tuesday night.
The win was a hard fought game against the St. Thomas
University Tommies which took an overtime period to complete. The Clippers were able to outscore the
Tommies 10-2 in the overtime period to secure the 74-66 victory. The end of regulation was filled with
excitement as the Tommies knocked down a 15 foot jump shot with 6.2 seconds
left. After a timeout the Clippers
in-bounded to Brian Alexander who was able to penetrate the middle of the
Tommies defense and complete a pass to Cliff McDonald who laid in the basket to
tie the score. The Clippers were led in
scoring and rebounding by McDonald with 18 points and 7 rebounds and Zach
Armstrong with 16 points and 7 rebounds. UMM Coach Brac Brady was pleased to get the win but saw a lot of areas
to work on, "It was nice to get the first game under our belt and pull out a
close victory. I thought our crowd was
great, especially for this early in the season. The team will continue to work on our defensive assignments and
rotations and being a lot more patient on offense."
The Clippers will be playing in the Reynolds
Center again on Thursday, November
5th against Unity College. Tip for the game is 8 pm.
